Our illustrations will do best to describe this Civil War vintage item except to advise that the two piece rock maple shoe last measures 10 7/16 inches from toe to the back of the heal and both pieces are marked WHITMARSH PAT. 1864 Our research identified the patentee as Henry M. Whitmarsh, listed as a resident manufacturer of Abington, Massachusetts in the 1860 U. S. Census. A bit of a variation from the 1864 drawing, this example has the subject iron plate on the heel rather than the toe as illustrated in the drawing. Well established as a one industrytown (shoemaking) by the 19th century, at the time of the outbreak of the Civil War, Abington, Mass. was well positioned to respond to the Union’s desperate demand for footwear with major contracts for boots and shoes satisfied by Abington cobblers.
