Measuring approximately 8 ¾ X 4 inches, this silver plated memorial coffin plate bears the deeply struck figure of a Grand Army of the Republic membership medal with a bold G. A. R. the hand engraved Benaiah Colby DIED Feb.5, 1893 A 88ys 2ms 5ds.
Benaiah (a.k.a Beniah) Colby was a fifty-five year old resident of Franklin, New Hampshire when he enlisted and was mustered in on August 23, 1861 as a Wagoner of Co. H 3rd New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged for disability on May 7, 1862 at Edisto Island, South Carolina. Colby saw subsequent service in Co. C 24th Veteran Reserve Corps. Colby was interred in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Peterborough, New Hampshire. The plate is maker marked on the back SARGENT & CO. – USA – NEW HAVEN, CONN. A nice item for the GAR or 3rd N.H. collector, these coffin plate memorials were passed to the veteran’s family and seldom reach the collector market.
