This nice Civil War CDV was done by photographers Cross & Childs, Forts Richardson & Lyon, Virginia and bears the period ink identification of Silas L. Haywood who enlisted and was mustered in on May 22, 1861 as a Private of Co. A 2nd New Hampshire Infantry. He was promoted to Sargent then commissioned to 2nd Lieutenant in 1862 then 1st Lt. July 2, 1863. Lt. Haywood was mustered out on June 21, 1864. A hard fought regiment, the 2nd New Hampshire participated in the following engagements during Haywood’s tenure with the regiment: Bull Run, Williamsburg, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Chantilly, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and more. Shows some age but a sharp photo with crisp focus and strong contrast.
