This desirable Civil War soldier’s identification disk was hand fashioned from a period U. S. large cent, its faces filed flat and stamped WM. H. PARKER CO.G 14TH N.H.VOLS. 1862 Provenance is offered by a deep, obviously natural age patina and our letter documenting the fact that the piece emanated from the long time personal collection of Dr. Francis Lord. (see below) William Henry Parker was a 16 year old resident of Keene, New Hampshire when he enlisted on June 19 1861 as a drummer of Co. H 2nd New Hampshire Infantry. Parker was discharged for disability at Bladensburg, Maryland approximately one month after the July 21 Union rout at 1st Bull Run. The 2nd N. H. Volunteers loss there was reported as 7 killed, 56 wounded, 46 missing. Not to be denied, young William Parker enlisted once more on September 23. 1862 and was mustered into Co. G of the 14th New Hampshire Infantry. He was transferred into the Veteran Reserve Corps on July 1, 1864 and was discharged for promotion on April 18, 1865 and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant A Co. 6th U. S. Volunteer Infantry. He was Breveted to 1st Lt. on January 2, 1866 and was mustered out on October 15, 1866. After the war Parker relocated to Deadwood, South Dakota, where he died in 1908. He is interred at Arlington National Cemetery. Of interest to the collector and preserved in our accompanying letter will be the fact that we acquired this piece several years ago when we were fortunate enough to purchase several groupings from the personal collection of our longtime friend, Dr. Francis Lord. A pioneer Civil War collector from a day when nearly no one else paid much attention to the details of many now valued Civil War collectable categories, Francis authored the widely known, multi volume, pioneer reference, Lord’s CIVIL WAR COLLECTORS ENCYCLOPEDIA. While a lot of detailed knowledge has been gained as the interest and value of Civil War collectibles increased so dramatically over the years, Dr. Lord’s first and second volumes in particular and his Civil War Sutlers & Their Wares continue to offer valuable and reliable reference to Civil War collectors.
