A nice document for the Maine Civil War enthusiast and autograph collector, is this original widows pension with the signatures of Selden Connor as Governor and Jonathan P Cilley as Adjutant General. The document measures approximately 8 ˝ X 14 inches and remains in nice period condition, on fading, rips, tears or repairs. Issued in 1876 and embellished with an embossed Maine seal this document authorized payment of a widow’s pension of $5.00 a month to Sarah Whitney, widow of Pvt. Lemue B. Whitney of Co. B 1st Maine Heavy Artillery. Lemue Whitney had enlisted in August of 1862 as a Private of Co. B 18th Maine Infantry which later became the 1st Heavy Artillery. He was killed in action on May 19, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia. Civil War historians will recognize Selden Connor for his service as Lt. Colonel with the hard fought 7th Maine Infantry then Colonel of the 19th Maine and General, U. S. Volunteers. Severely wounded, losing his right leg at the Battle of the Wilderness Gen. Connor served as Governor of Maine 1876 – 1879. Equally known is Jonathan P. Cilley who enlisted as Captain of Co. B 1st Maine Cavalry in October of 1861. Wounded at Middletown then Saint Mary’s Church, Virginia, before the close of the Civil War Cilley would be promoted through the ranks to Colonel then Brigadier General. After the war he was active in veteran affairs, particularly through the 1st Maine Cavalry Regimental Association. He served as Maine Adjutant General in the Gov. Selden Connor administration. Don't forget to give our search feature a try for special wants. A simple key word in lower case works best. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques !!
