Difficult to find even in relic condition Civil War era food tins in the pleasing condition of this example rate as a special find even in the most common approximately 3 X 4 inch size; add to condition consideration, the fact that this example is in the larger, seldom seen, 5 inch diameter by 5 9/16 inch size and you have rare relic indeed. Period tin cans of this size with the wide mouth opening are most frequently considered as coffee or oyster cans. (We are offering illustrations of period tins as reference.) A special item for the Civil War mess gear collector or the enthusiast who has special appreciation for the seldom surviving personal items common to everyday period use.
