Original HAND-BOOK OF ARTILLERY, For The Service of the United States by Joseph Rogers (1863) with period signature Col. Chas. O. Wood 8th Infty. Cal. Vol- Alcatraz Island San Francisco Harbor fly with an additional Chas. O. Wood U. S. Army on the same page. A following page is inscribed Chas. O. Wood Capt. 9th U. S. Infty. Bvt. Maj. U.S.A. and there are no fewer than six additional Chas. O. Wood U. S. Army inscriptions scattered through the manual. All are in the same stylized hand Charles Wood. We have left the manual as found, well used in the period and a bit loose at the cover hinges and fly leaf. All else is tight with no missing, folded, stained or otherwise damaged pages. (The cover hinges and fly page are intact and could be easily restored but we would leave this historic Alcatraz Island artillery manual as it was last used.)
Charles Ogden Wood was a Terre Haute, Indiana resident when he first enlisted April 26 1861 and was commissioned as a Major of the 11th Indiana Infantry. Maj. Wood was mustered out with the three month 11th Indiana boys on August 4,1861 and was immediately commissioned as a Captain of the 9th Infantry, U. S. Army. headquartered in Washington Territory. On February 1, 1865 Wood was commissioned Colonel 8th California Infantry headquartered at Alcatraz Island, San Francisco Harbor. During the Civil War, Alcatraz's role was primarily as a military prison holding Confederates with numerous other military prisoners and local civilians who had been arrested for treason. Soon the rooms in the guardhouse were filled and a temporary wooden prison was built. Later several adjoining structures were built by jailhouse labor. By the close of the Civil War in 1865, the island contained over one hundred cannons to include a number of 15 inch Rodmans used to issue the official mourning salute during San Francisco's honorary funeral procession for President Lincoln. A rare piece of Western Americana from the early days of what was destined to become the most infamous prison in U. S. history.
