Clearly a bit of an enigma even to today’s experts in the field, (see: CONFEDERATE SADDLES & HORSE EQUIPMENT by: Ken R. Knopp) the southern made military saddle of the Civil War is an item prized by today’s collector / historians. A must have to complete any Confederate cavalry grouping and an eye-catching addition to any display of Civil War military equipage, the elusive hand crafted variation on the Yankee McClellan military saddle, is a treasure found only in the best of collections public or private. Though thousands of these hide covered saddles with their distinctive brown leather furniture were made, their construction, often of necessity from substandard materials and frequently by less than fully experienced artisans, in combination with long hard use during the war and extensive use in the poverty stricken reconstruction era South, has left few survivors in any condition. We think our photographs will speak best for the condition of this example except to reassure the viewer that the piece is entirely original and of the period just as it came to light from decades of storage. Unlike Yankee arsenal and private saddlers who marked their work, the Southern made saddle whether arsenal or privately fabricated were seldom maker marked. This example is no exception. Common to many a Southern made and used saddle, this example was never fitted with brass mortise plates or iron hardware available to the better supplied Yankee saddler. (see: 4th Va. Cav. & C.S. variation illustrated on p. 72/73 of Knopp’s CONFEDERATE SADDLES & HORSE EQUIPMENT). Of note in this reliable reference, is the author’s special notation on page 9 (Observations on identifying Confederate – Made Horse Equipment ) that Confederate saddles displayed frequent variations even from the same arsenal, contract and private makers. Such generally minor variations were the result of everything from chronic material shortages, level of labor availability and skill as well as proper oversight and quality control. Whether viewed as Campbell military style variation of the early plantation saddle, or a modified McClellan style officers saddle of Southern derivation, this attractive Civil War vintage military saddle will fit well in the best of collections. As with all direct sales, we are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with refund of the purchase price upon return as purchased! Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques !!
