A nicely marked and labeled Civil War vintage apothecary bottle. Complete with the usually missing original ground glass stopper, this bottle is marked at the rim of it’s base W. N. WALTON Pat’d SEPTEMBER 23d, 1862. The bottle is a nice size for display standing just shy of 8 inches high and is in nice condition with no chips or cracks. The original gold backed glass insert label identifies the original content as TR. STRAMON. (tincture of stramon) which appears in Dunglison’s 1860 Medical Lexicon as an herbal concoction consisting of alcohol and a specified dash of powdered seeds. The prescribed tincture was administered for cramping and other maladies of the stomach. An eye appealing item for the Civil War era medical or hospital display. (see: Damman’s Pictorial Encyclopedia of Civil War Medical Instruments & Equipment )
