A wonderful example of the type, this powder horn measures a full 16 inches and remains in wonderful condition with no cracks or wormholes. The horn retains a natural soft age patina with the original rasp and scrape marks from working the heavy steer horn down to offer the desired lighter weight and shape. The butt end is cut to accommodate lace attachment of a carrying strap while the nicely shaped spout leaves an ample shoulder to secure the forward end. The spout retains it’s original shaped hardwood stopper. The nicely fitted pine butt plug measures approximately 3 7/8 X 3 3/8 inches and is secured by four black-iron cut nails. The slightly domed plug features the bold entails of the horn’s original carrier nicely cut across it’s face. While we have been unsuccessful in verifying the middle initial of the S C F inscription our knowledge that the old powder horn emanated from a Foster who lived in Oakland ,Maine was fruitful to the extent that we found an Edwin Foster of Oakland, Maine listed in the National Register – SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION as the great-grandson of one Stewart Foster (no middle initial given). Per our 1902 edition of this register of Revolutionary War descendents Stewart Foster was a Private in Arnold’s Regiment. Not the solid provenance one would prefer but research worthy of interest and preservation. As with all direct sales, we are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with refund of the purchase price upon return as purchased!
