| The Civil War era QUASSIA CUP was turned from quassia wood, sometimes called bitter ash or bitter bark, and was once very popularly taken as a cure for fever, cramping, dysentery and other like maladies. While like this example most were without such a sales embellishment, we have seen such cups labeled so as to tout the cure of all manner of ailments with attribution on some to a slave’s discovery. Though popular in the period few have survived outside of medical collections and are now seldom found on today’s market in any condition. This example remains in excellent original condition standing approximately 5 inches with a diameter of about 2 3/8 inches. A neat all original medical cure item and a good companion piece to go with a period bitters bottle. |
