A wonderfully hand carved laurel root pipe in the figure of an African American man. This is one of the best quality carved laurel pipes we have encountered from the skill of the artisan to the material used. A beautifully shaped work with strong black features this exceptionally well selected piece of highly figured burl has survived the years to mellow to an attractive patina. The pipe demonstrates good age with eye appealing evidence of period smoking. The original natural amber mouthpiece remains intact and unbroken without the usual cracking and damage as is unfortunately the usual condition of such fine old amber. The piercing eyes of our striking figure are of set in milk glass. The pipe is unmarked as to maker and unlike imported examples is without identification as to origin. This and the style of work as well as the material leaves little doubt that the piece is domestic. All original and in fine untouched condition, the desirability of this attractive example of Americana will not be limited to the tobacco and smoking implement collector but will appeal to a wide variety of collecting interests from the Civil War through the turn of the century. The appeal of this striking piece will speak best for itself as you view our illustrations. (illustrated here with a U.S. quarter for size comparison) As with all direct sales, we are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with refund of the purchase price upon return as purchased!
