We will let our illustrations provide most of the description of this offering except to advise the viewer that what you are looking at is an all original Confederate officers forage cap as seen in the example published on page 164 of Time / Life's ECHOES of GLORY - Arms & Equipment of the Confederacy. (see also, an example published from the Museum of the Confederacy collection in Gallery Books Commanders of the Civil War. The hat measures a full 5 inches high from it's bound, tarred linen bill to top edge of it's quatrifoiled crown. The side buttons are the usual staff type back marked EXTRA QUALITY. This rare example of Confederate headgear remains in excellent condition with minimal mothing and demonstrates good evidence of period use and originality. The brown polished cotton liner is intact but with an inconsequential split now and again as good evidence of age and originality. There is a small 2 1/2 inch section of the pig skin sweat band that has parted ways with the bulk of the feature solidly in place with solid evidence of originality.
