| Not to be confused with the deeper and more frequently encountered pie plate, or commercially produced type, this period hand constructed tinned sheet iron mess plate with it’srolled reinforcing rim will be especially appreciated by the knowledgeable Civil War collector historian. Well documented by site excavation, and in major collections, authentic Civil War period tin mess plates are among the more desirable and difficult personal artifacts to acquire. This smaller than standard plate measuring just under 8 inches in diameter with shallow profile would fit nicely in the haversack or knapsack and rolled reinforcing rim insuring durability under heavy use and carrying, would make this example a favorite as a personal mess item. With obvious wear from period use yet remaining in excellent original condition with a nice original age patina to it’s tinned surface, this scarce piece of mess gear will add eye appeal and authenticity to any period grouping.
