early post Civil War - FAYETTEVILLE N.C. SOUVENIR CANNON

NOTICE

********NOW OPERATING FROM OUR NEW HEADQUARTERS ********

Now fully operational from the beautiful Pacific North West, we encourage all to keep a close eye as we unpack posted offerings and continue what will be an ongoing effort of unpacking the collection while taking stock with an eye toward thinning out our accumulation of treasures. After years of seeking out and acquiring all manner of quality antique Americana from simple but seldom surviving items of special interest to historically important treasures, Janet and I look forward to offering the fruits of our years of seeking out such to new and appreciative homes.

Manufacturer: handcrafted antique

The popularity of battlefield visits as a feature of reunions created a natural market for souvenirs that enterprising veterans couldn’t ignore. Local veterans soon discovered that trinkets such as walking sticks, desk displays and the like fashioned of wood harvested from battlefield sites were easy sales to returning veterans. This neat little wooden cannon is just such a piece. By necessity, made in limited quantities, these relics of Civil War sites have become quite collectable with the earlier crude examples of individual craftsmanship the most desirable. This example is rather crudely fashioned from raw wood and measures approximately 6 inches in total length with ’ Fayetteville N. C.’ burned into the length of the cannon tube.
