A tough one to find in any condition, this remnant of one of the most sought after of Confederate Regiments regiments remains in a most eye appealing condition; solid and untouched with only a smattering very small moth holes (none larger than 1/32" diameter) scattered about it’s wool body and a bit of moth tracking of the nap. No tears, seam splits or repairs; a good solid bound leather bill and it’s original thin leather chinstrap held by matching one piece buttons and a vintage printed collection number paper tag on the leather sweatband, all bring a subtle allure to this fine old piece. A museum or collection label, matching number tag in style and vintage, remains on the underside of the bill; it categorizes the piece simply as CONFEREDATE. A wonderful brown striped cotton lining remains solid and without flaw against the oilcloth inner crown panel. The distinctive blue and off butternut / gray of this desirable piece of Confederate headgear will set it off as a classic of the type. ( A brief but worthwhile relocation of the 2nd Maryland C.S.A. with some emphasis on the Regiment’s distinctive uniform and it’s reputation for uniformity in particular their favor of the jaunty blue and gray kepi may be found on page 127 of Don Troiani’s CIVIL WAR by Troiani and Brian C. Pohanka. This excellent reference also offers the artist’s rendering of use of the cap.)
