Manufacturer: American antique
The lowly sewing thimble seldom reaches any Civil War artifact catalogue and yet a good thimble is essential to the most rudimentary mending kit and would surely be included every soldier’s housewife mending kit. We have a small quantity of the heavier iron type and are pricing them here individually if you would like one to go with your grouping of personal items. Less likely to be a preference in the gentle ladies sewing basket, these pure utilitarian iron thimbles were less common, even in the period, than the myriad of finer types. Aside from camp excavations that produce relic examples (see: Philip’s Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields & Campsites of the Civil War ) this type can be a tough one to find when you need a non excavated example. These are original, period examples that remain in excellent condition with a nice age patina as evidence of originality. A good chance to add an original to your sewing kit if you need one. If you would be just as happy with the more finely made brass type we have period examples as well and for a bit less. (use our search feature to see item 1177)
