This 1899 Illinois Department Encampment medal of the Grand Army of the Republic representative’s medal remains in fine original condition. It bears the figure of Department Commander and CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONOR winner and late commander of the 27th Illinois Volunteer Infantry John Charles Black. Black was a 22 year old resident of Crawfordsville, Indiana when he enlisted as Sergt. Major on April 14, 1861. On September 18 he was mustered into the Field & Staff as Major of the 37th Illinois Infantry. He was severely wounded at Pea Ridge on March 7, 1862 and was promoted Lt. Col. the following July. He was again listed as receiving severe wounds on December 7, 1862 at Prairie Grove. It was for his extreme gallantry here that John Charles Black would receive the Congressional Medal of Honor (see: Deeds of Valor). Black was promoted to full Colonel of that regiment on February 1, 1863 and would be brevetted to Brig. General on March 13, 1865. After the war Black held membership in the Geo. H. Thomas G. A. R. Post # 5 in Chicago. Before his passing in 1915 Black would serve both as the Illinois Department Commander and National Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic.
