Click for more detail...
3017
BEADLE’S DIME - KOMIKAL SPEAKER An original example of one of the well known DIME NOVEL pulp paper publications founded by Erasmus Beadle in 1860. A popular personal item of the Civil War haversack and winter camp reader, the Beadle Dime Novel remained a favorite in the post Civil War years into the 1870’s, 1880’s and earliest 1890’s with sensational content and patriotic blood-and-thunder tales of semi fictional frontier heroes evolving into publications of city stories of street boys, innumerable handbooks, songbooks, dialogues, speakers presentations and softbound books of whimsical stories and jokes for parlor entertainment. It is clear that the 1860 appearance Beadle’s line of inexpensive soft cover publications and there popularity in the Civil War camp was a strong contributing factor of their longevity into the early 1900’s when that longevity seemed to fade away along with the shrinking number of Civil War veterans. This example measures approximately 4 X 6.5 inches with 100 pages, all tight and in place with no major problems or stains with the exception of natural age coloration. This example was registered for publication in 1873 and is titled BEADLE’S DIME KOMIKAL SPEAKER . The title page proclaims a content of DROLL, WHIMSICAL, LAUGHABLE & ODD PIECES FOR RECITATION. On the cover reflecting the popularity with the Civil War vet., GAR crowd is a whimsical illustration of a bespectaled writer in forage cap. A neat piece of Americana, the vast majority of these fragile pulp paper, soft bound, books were passed around to be used and reused until used up and cast aside or used to start the wood stove. Not a big deal but a neat piece of Americana seldom seen in this condition or as an original printing in any condition.

Click for more detail...
3018
Civil War & earlier - hand made FOLDING KNIFE Little could have been more common to the 19th century working man / frontiersman / hunter or soldier that a good sturdy utility knife. While many fancied the belt knife few ventured into the day without a good sized folding knife in pocket, hunting bag or haversack. As the vast majority got used up and cast aside over time, few of these early personal working knives have survived to be appreciated by today’s collector historian. This is particularly true of period hand made examples over the much more frequently encountered mass produced factory manufactured examples. Based on the additional skill and effort required in hand crafting a folding knife over a fixed blade belt knife, it is no wonder that all but a very few period cutlerer / tool makers kept to the popular fixed bladed belt knife. The fact of the matter was that the simple economics of competing with popular factory made Sheffield folding knives had to be a good reason why so few domestics fashioned folding knives. This stout, stag handled, folding knife measures approximately 4 5/8 inches long when closed. It’s 3 5/16 inch clipped point blade opens to offer a hardy knife of just under 8 inches in total length. All in good serviceable condition with good evidence of period use with a blade unmarked by it’s maker but well marked by repeated honing and a heavy stag grip bearing no fewer than seventeen notches cut into its edge by the original user to commemorate some occurrence long lost in time. The iron bound knife is clearly hand made and as such is a one of a kind relic of the skill of an unknown early to mid 19th century country craftsman and owner / user. All original and functionable, this wonderful example of frontier through Civil War era common life necessity will fit well in any quality grouping.

Click for more detail...
3020
early Civil War - Chasseurs d'Orleans Legion – New Orleans HAT DEVICE This all original hat device measures approximately 3.25 inches in diameter and was fashioned from sheet brass with a thin patent leather backing and applied initials of silvered die struck sheet metal. All remains in nice condition and is unquestionably original with a nice even natural age patina.
We have seen only one other of these and it was years ago in a small private museum in New Orleans. That device was mounted on what we would surly say was an import leather shako. The late 1850s style militia hat was identified simply as having been used by an early Civil War New Orleans militia unit. When we came across this same device with the distinctive C O L we were prompted to do a bit of research on early N.O. Confederate outfits and found a single match to the COL shako in the old museum display. While the new owner will surely enjoy doing some additional research on the service of the outfit, we found the all important place to start. Chasseurs d'Orleans Legion (a.k.a. - Chasseurs d'Orleans, Foreign Brigade, La. Legion) is listed in Andrew Booth’s 1920 work, Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers and Louisiana Confederate Commands (available on Ancestry.com).

Click for more detail...
3021
late 18th early 19th century - PERSONALLY DECORATED RAZOR Our photographs will do best to describe the charm and condition of this attractive early American folk-art decorated razor. The classically shaped heavy square cut blade remains in nice condition with it’s original smooth edge. It is unmarked as to maker and is simply marked WARRANTED on the tang. The iron riveted, slabbed horn grip remains in solid condition with no cracks and only a small bit of worm damage at one corner as good evidence of age and originality. An attractive natural age patina contributes to the razor’s authenticity.
Of most interest to the historian of the period will be the classic American decorative designs of hand done pewter inlays created by cuttting figures out of the horn and depositing molten lead in the depressions. With a good hot hardwood charcoal fire and iron melting ladle ever present for the casting of musket balls in the hunting camp or militia bivouac of the period, this method of decoration of personal items became a pleasurable in the field pastime.

A tough one to find in any condition, this remnant of one of the most sought after of Confederate Regiments regiments remains in a most eye appealing condition; solid and untouched with only a smattering very small moth holes (none larger than 1/32" diameter) scattered about it’s wool body and a bit of moth tracking of the nap. No tears, seam splits or repairs; a good solid bound leather bill and it’s original thin leather chinstrap held by matching one piece buttons and a vintage printed collection number paper tag on the leather sweatband, all bring a subtle allure to this fine old piece. A museum or collection label, matching number tag in style and vintage, remains on the underside of the bill; it categorizes the piece simply as CONFEREDATE. A wonderful brown striped cotton lining remains solid and without flaw against the oilcloth inner crown panel. The distinctive blue and off butternut / gray of this desirable piece of Confederate headgear will set it off as a classic of the type. ( A brief but worthwhile relocation of the 2nd Maryland C.S.A. with some emphasis on the Regiment’s distinctive uniform and it’s reputation for uniformity in particular their favor of the jaunty blue and gray kepi may be found on page 127 of Don Troiani’s CIVIL WAR by Troiani and Brian C. Pohanka. This excellent reference also offers the artist’s rendering of use of the cap.) A most desirable offering for the Confederate historian, collector and Civil War enthusiast presented here with our usual assurance of originality and authenticity. We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales!
